‘Bekal Fort’ is the largest fort in Kerala, spreading over 40 acres and is located in Kasaragod district of North Kerala. Shivappa Nayaka, a notable ruler of the Keladi Nayaka Kingdom of Bednore constructed the Fort in 1650 AD.The picturesque souvenir of the ‘Gods own Country’ was rightfully placed on the tourism map of India in 1992 when, the Government of India declared Bekal Fort as a special tourism area. The formation of Bekal Tourism Development Corporation in the year 1995, transformed Bekal Fort into an international tourism centre.
The cameras captured the Beauty of the Fort in Movies like the song ‘Uyire’ (Tamil) in the movie ‘Bombay’ directed by Mani Ratnam. The place is a famous shooting location and many commercials and TV ads are shot at this place.
The fort, marked with the water-tank with its flight of steps, the tunnel opening towards the south, the magazine for keeping ammunition and served as a storage place for ammunition and a strategic defense location for the erstwhile Kingdoms. At the centre of the fort is located, an ObservationTower built by Tipu Sultan, which offers a breathtaking view of the coastline. Also in existence is a rest-house built by the British Government. The protection and preservation of Bekal fort has been entrusted to the Archaeological Survey of India.
Bekal Fort has been a source of attraction for historians, tourists and nature – lovers for centuries embodying memories of a glorious past. The place can be reached by road/ train and nearest railway stations are Bekal Fort, Kotikulam, Kanhangad and Kasargod.
