Calangute, also known as the “Queen of Beaches”, is a small town with a permanent population of approximately 16,000 (2001) in North Goa and is famous for its beach, the largest in north Goa, the place is frequented by thousands of domestic and international tourists. It is located at a mere 45 minute bus ride up the coast from the capital and is Goa’s busiest and most commercialized locale.
Calangute is Goa’s flagship beach and is also the most commercialized of all beaches in Goa. Due to its extreme popularity, Calangute beach beckons tourists and backpackers from all over the world and the beach remains packed with tourists all year around.
Lots of shows are organized on the beach including rock, pop beat shows, open air dances, and fetes. Calangute offers all modern amenities like a post office, banks, foreign exchange offices and medical facilities. A must see place in Calangute is the Church of St. Alex, built in 1741.
