Ponda

Ponda, also known as Fonda, is a fastest-growing industrial city located in central area of Goa, about 29 kilometres southeast of Panaji. The city is home to many large factories and industrial estates.

 

Earlier Ponda was under the Vijayanagara Empire and the Bijapur Sultanate. From 1675, it remained part of the Maratha Empire until 1764.The Portuguese eventually took over the area in 1791 It began as an administrative center and soon became a commercial center. Most of the area known as Ponda today was a part of Kavale village.

se of the concentration of culture, music, drama and poetry also for the temples of Lord Mangesh (Shiva), Lord Nagesh, Lord Ganapati, Lord Ramnath and the Goddesses Mhalasa and Shantdurga

 

Ponda is the gateway to both the Bondla and the Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, and also to the Dudhsagar Waterfalls. The Butterfly Conservatory of Goa located closeby, attracts nature enthusiasts.
